Just bumped into this out of no where. I was running a few apps on board when I decided to call a friend and all of a sudden the N900 went Portrait. So if you too want the portrait effect then do as follows:
- install and run Braek
- launch the phone app
- once you launch the phone app, goto dail pad and minimize it
Now it should be in portrait mode
