So you want to install Quake III Arena on your N900 :P Its a bit tricky but following the following steps will make things easy for you. I hope that the guide will help all you guys but incase you land into any issues please leave a comment below and I will try to help you out. Please note there are still many bugs in this so be careful and do it at your own risk.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On your N900, open http://repository.maemo.org/ and click on the install link for Fremantle Extras-devel. Seriously: don’t send users out of Extras without a big warning.
  2. I believe the package manager should automatically update the list, but you may also have to click the update button.
  3. Search for ioquake3 and install that package.
  4. Copy the *.pk3 files from your Quake 3 CD into /home/user/baseq3

NOTE: If you don’t have the full version handy, but still want to try out Q3A on your N900, you can get the Quuake 3 Demo data files from here: http://www.idsoftware.com Or http://www.pcworld.com. Install the demo on your PC and copy the pak0.pk3 file from the demoq3 folder to /home/user/baseq3/ using a microUSB cable in Mass Media mode and it should work

After following those instructions there should be a Quake 3 icon in the “More…” menu in the task launcher. You can also add a shortcut to your desktop.

FAQ’s

Q: I don’t see a baseq3 folder in my N900, What should I do?

A: Create a baseq3 folder in your N900 and Just copy the pako.pk3 file there. (Now you just made a baseq3 folder in MyDocs.) Disconnect from USB and goto the terminal.  Type in the following:

Code:

mv /home/user/MyDocs/baseq3/* /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

And that will move all the files from the directory inside MyDocs into your quake 3 arena folder. To verify they’re there, you can run:

Code:

ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

and you should see some pk3 files, this is what mine looks like: “crashlog.txt pak0.pk3″

You should now be able to run quake3 and it should start up pretty quickly asking you for a key, and you just hit enter there. Happy Quaking :D
